MEGALITHIC SITES

Once erected during important events, such as weddings, or to mark the founding of a new village, crumbling stone megaliths can be found across Nias. The people of the island once believed in Animism and Dynamism, trusted in spirits and carved ancestral statues, and today the legacy of their beliefs can be found in several spectacular megalithic sites around the island.

Bitaha

BITAHA

Established ten generations ago by the ancestors of the Halawa clan, the Bitaha site features megaliths arranged in front of a beautiful oval-shaped traditional house.

Tetegewo is the largest and most accessible megalithic site in South Nias, and was formerly the residence and court of the King. It has beautiful round stone tables, where noblewomen once danced.
